Tahoe to SF!

After so many satisfying meals recently, I shouldn’t be surprised when some miss the mark. Tired from our long day of skiing, I couldn’t figure out what I wanted for breakfast on Sunday. Natch, I tried a few things! First I ate a salmon & spinach omelet and strawberries. Nope, that’s not what I wanted.

Next, Velvet Husband and I split this massive waffle. It was alright, but it paled in comparison to the apple pancakes. Strike two! I stopped at this because I wasn’t hungry anymore, but man…it’s days like these when I crave a smoothie or a trusty bowl of oats!

But with a view like this, I can forgive and forget a multitude of breakfast sins. 🙂

In retrospect, I was probably just dehydrated from the day before. It should come as no surprise that nothing sounded good when what I needed first was good old-fashioned water! After hydrating, relaxing, and walking, I was beginning to feel like myself. I’m learning more and more how integral proper hydration is to our overall health and wellbeing. I have a bad habit of waiting to drink enough water until I’m thirsty, but at that point, our bodies are already feeling the effects of dehydration. How much water do you drink each day? What differences have you noticed in your health since you started hydrating properly?

On the way back to San Francisco, we stopped in Truckee, a small mountain town. We stumbled upon Elijah Bleu’s, a quaint coffee house that also serves hearty meals. Elija Bleu’s Veggie chili and cornbread hit the spot for lunch. There, now that’s better.

Now, brace yourselves for this one, y’all! During our lunchtime chatter, I couldn’t help but notice how Velvet Husband was situated directly between two little pig portraits. When I pointed this out to the house comedian, he promptly showed off his best pig-pression to complete the trio. Ladies and gents, I’m honored to introduce you to the three not-so-little pigs of Truckee! I love this man!

Oh yes, this happened. I was laughing to the point of crying, which happens pretty often around my husband, the house comedian! Reduced to sidesplitting laughter, our fellow coffee shop patrons weren’t sad to see the giggly tourists go! And hit the road we did…back to San Francisco.

Can you guess what I was was craving for dinner when we got home? 😉

When was the last time you laughed so hard that you cried?

Tahoe Day 1!

All weekend long, I couldn’t get the Jai Ho song  from Slumdog Millionaire out of my head. I sang the chorus on the ride to Tahoe with a few changed lyrics that you can probably guess. Over. And over. And over again. Ta-hoe! Yes, I know what you’re thinking. How did my husband get so lucky? 😉

We woke up on Saturday ready to hit the slopes! Feeling adventurous and craving carbs, I started the day at our hotel with something a little out of [my] ordinary: delicious apple pancakes! No syrup or extra sugar necessary because they were standalone delish! They reminded me of my mom’s apple cake. After checking out the restaurant’s buffet-style vat of oatmeal, I knew their oats couldn’t compete with mine. And really, who wants to be disappointed first thing in the morning? So, apple pancakes it was. Darn. 😉 My overwhelmingly large pancake platter originally had five of these beauties, so I donated the pancake surplus to the birthday boy. He was not upset.

After breakfast, we took a stroll around our cottage. Yes, our cottage! We got a free upgrade to our very own cottage on Lake Tahoe because the hotel was out of rooms in the main building. Once again…darn.

After our walk, we headed to Northstar Mountain and enjoyed the mild temperatures and open trails. I highly recommend skiing towards the end of the season if you want to avoid the crowds/getting slammed into by snowboarders (happened to me last year — ouch).

Velvet Husband took this picture after I successfully flew down a slope I initially deemed too steep. The birthday boy kept  leading me down fun little trails with names like “Drop Off” and “Express.” I emerged victorious!

Apres ski, I enjoyed a sugary coffee drink (a drink I will not be getting again soon because it didn’t make me feel good later — see my about section!) and half of this little Red Velvet whoopie pie. When I asked the barista if she recommended the whoopie pie, she recommended it and let me have one gratis! Do I really have to say it? Whoopie!

After a little R&R back at the hotel, we were starving! We originally planned on getting sushi, but the restaurant we planned to go to was closed. Everything closes early in Tahoe, so we were lucky to stumble upon a great restaurant, Bite Restaurant and Bar. The tapas were delicious. I had a mixed green and apple salad with no cheese and fish tacos made with halibut. Velvet Husband had the grilled beef tenderloin bites and said they were better than his steak at Harris’s last week! I drank lots of water and skipped dessert and drinks. As you can see, dinner was delicious by itself!

After dinner, I joined the birthday boy at our hotel casino where I played [very little] Wheel of Fortune and watched the husband play his favorite game, craps. We quickly learned that he loses less money when I’m around because I tend to play it safe, i.e. I don’t like gambling! I kept thinking of all the things that the gambling money could buy. I’m definitely more conservative than he is when it comes to casinos. Playing craps is to Velvet Husband as getting a facial is to Red Velvet Wife. 😉

Stay tuned for a recap of our (abbreviated) second day when we drove through the Northern California town of Truckee on the way home to San Francisco. Hope you’re having a fantastic day!

Have you accomplished something this year that makes you feel fist-pump-style proud? What was your initial reaction when you first accomplished your goal?

How is your weekend so far? We’re having such an amazing time in Tahoe and it’s not over yet! Sunny, high 40s-50 degree temps, and plenty of…snow? Yes! Spring ski means less crowded slopes, good powder, and it’s H-O-T-T out there! After a half-day ski at Northstar, we’re recovering and vegging (read — Velvet Husband is passed out next to me in sweet slumber!) before we head to dinner and then get our gamble on. More precisely, until Velvet Husband gets his gamble on. I’ll be there for moral support.

For a [small] change, I started yesterday with cinnamon whipped banana oatmeal topped with chia seeds, blueberries and peanut butter. No milk or sugar necessary because the whipped banana is so sweet! I’ll definitely add this to the breakfast rotation eat this everyday for a week because it’s that good.

My kale-banana-chocolate-berry smoothie bowl tasted delish as usual but looked a tad funny, so I’ll instead distract you with my cutesy bowls. Pretty, yes? Take note of the pretty floral pattern, not the odd smoothie! I picked up four of these pretty bowls in Fredericksburg, Texas a few years ago, but I think they’re made in Chicago. Let me know if you’re interested and I’ll get you the specifics. Funny-looking smoothie, seriously cute bowl. 🙂

On the way to Tahoe, we yelped to find a convenient place for dinner, and wow — we were so happy with our choice! We ate dinner at Paul Martin’s American Bistro in Roseville. The servers were So Cal laid back and friendly and the food was unexpectedly delicious for the price. The prices were reasonable compared to what we usually see in San Francisco! We had such a fun little date and even got to sit outside because the weather is much warmer than in San Francisco. Silly husband. 😉

What a fantastic restaurant find for our little jaunt up north! I love Yelp for road trip purposes, don’t you? Do you rely on yelp to find new-to-you restaurants? What are some of the best and worst restaurants you’ve come across on road trips?

Velvet Husband loved his banana cream pie, his favorite-est (new word!) dessert in the world. Nothing on the dessert menu grabbed my attention, so I passed. By the time we got to the hotel, I needed craved a little sweetness, so I had a few peanut m&ms from the snackbar. There’s something to be said for indulging your childhood memories and enjoying a few halloween candy-type sweets once in a while, don’t you think?

Here we are on the mountain today with our super hot helmets! I hope you’re having a wonderful weekend with the people you love! xo
